The Great Gatsby Summary (Easy English, 3000 Words)
Chapter 1: Introduction
Nick Carraway moves to New York in 1922. He rents a small house in West Egg, near a big mansion owned by Jay Gatsby. Nick visits his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her rich husband, Tom, in East Egg. There, he meets Jordan Baker, a golfer. Nick learns that Tom is having an affair with another woman.
Chapter 2: The Affair
Tom takes Nick to the city. They stop at a garage owned by George Wilson. George's wife, Myrtle, is Tom’s lover. They all go to an apartment in New York where Tom and Myrtle have a small party. Tom hits Myrtle when she mentions Daisy’s name.
Chapter 3: Gatsby’s Party
Nick gets invited to one of Gatsby’s famous parties. Many rich people come, but no one knows much about Gatsby. Nick finally meets Gatsby, who is friendly and mysterious. They become friends.
Chapter 4: Gatsby’s Dream
Gatsby tells Nick that he loves Daisy and wants to meet her again. Gatsby and Daisy were in love before she married Tom. Gatsby hopes to win Daisy back. Nick helps Gatsby by inviting Daisy to his house for tea.
Chapter 5: Reunion
Daisy comes for tea and meets Gatsby again. They feel happy together. Gatsby shows Daisy his big house, trying to impress her with his wealth.
Chapter 6: Past and Present
Gatsby’s real name is James Gatz. He was poor and worked hard to become rich. Tom starts to dislike Gatsby and wants to protect his marriage.
Chapter 7: Confrontation
On a hot summer day, Tom, Daisy, Gatsby, Nick, and Jordan go to New York. Tom and Gatsby argue about Daisy. Gatsby wants Daisy to say she never loved Tom, but she can’t. That night, Myrtle runs into the street and gets hit by Gatsby’s car. Daisy was driving, but Gatsby takes the blame.
Chapter 8: Tragedy
Gatsby waits for Daisy to call him, but she doesn’t. George Wilson finds Gatsby and shoots him, thinking Gatsby killed Myrtle. Then, Wilson kills himself.
Chapter 9: The End
Nick plans Gatsby’s funeral, but very few people come. Daisy and Tom leave the city without telling anyone. Nick feels sad and goes back home.
Theme
The story shows how dreams, love, and money can’t always make people happy. It also shows the problems of the rich in the 1920s.
